BLUE CRUSH
JOLI Autumn/Winter 2020
Our original philosophy for our inaugural season was: Back to basics, back to nature. But how can we relate to nature when fall becomes winter and we’re all stuck indoors, surrounded by electronics?
And technology still calls to us even when we willfully disconnect from it. We feel guilty for turning a blind eye. Might we upset someone? Will we become uninformed? Indeed, what if we unplug, only to return and find the rest of the world in the midst of a new pandemic? Or worse – we find that people are forgetting about us! At times, the thought of disconnecting causes more anxiety than the obsession itself.
Yet, the pandemic gives us time to be alone – it even demands it. What does a world look like without “FOMO”? It exists deep within each of us. That grounded serenity that comes from feeling at once alien to and yet at home within the ever-changing present, while accepting the ways our present will inevitably morph into an even more-frenzied future. We have to constantly juggle being “in-the-moment,” but also “introspective” and “future-oriented” – we’re all meant to be time-travelers, basically.
This extra downtime gives us more time to experience the timelessness deep within ourselves, to experience silence even as the rest of the world continues to unravel in chaos.
With that sense of everlasting chill in mind, this fall collection was created using the naturally peaceful beauty and mesmerizing colors of Antarctica as the muse. Cool radiant blues reminiscent of the aquamarine-colored water of glacial lakes; deep reds and greens of the aurora australis; raw blue diamonds adding a touch of glistening ice. The Arctic as the symbol of our planet’s subconscious, and this jewelry collection as our interpretation of the Arctic.
May we continue to love both for many years to come.
